How much does an average slate roof cost? What about a tin roof?

I have just inherited a house from right around the turn of the century. There are some things that need to be fixed, like the roof. The original roof is slate and has been kept slate forever. Since the home is in New Hampshire, the snow and ice build up in the winters has done some damage and the roof need to be replaced. I would like to keep the original charm of the building, but at 23, I don’t think I have the funds to pay a lot. I was wondering if anyone knew the average cost of a slate roof compared to a tin or aluminium roof. Obviously without knowing the size and slope it’s hard to determine, but any rough figure would help. I would like to get this done soon before the snow really begins to fall here.

The bad news is the a slate roof will run at least $2000 and can go to $8000 a square which is a 10×10 foot area. A regular roof is about $200 a square. The good news is that it can repaired for less than a cheaper new roof would cost. If you don’t mind getting up on a roof it’s actually not that hard to do.
