should some of the new products offered be allowed on historic restoration?
ie slate roofs composites and such
The town I live in has a large historic homes preservation movement. They have strict codes and regulations on restorations of homes for them to qualify for Historic Home designation. These include floor plans, materials used and resemblence to the original structure. SO if you are asking for privately owned historic hoes then I say they sould remain as accurate to the times as possible.
Now if you are asking about government owned and maintained historic landmarks, I am torn. As someone who teaches and studies history I would like to see as many people interact with as much history as possible. If this means fudging a few corners to make history more accessable I completely understand. On the otherhand historians aren’t the only ones to study history. Take for example archietects (sp?). They study the past in their field. So by using different materials and such, the accurate preservations are important in their field including materials and methods used in construction. So I feel cutting corners at times is ok, but examples of historical architecture must be preserved at some locations as well.
